Getting it out there

I've learned a lot about myself over these last number of years, and how we tick as human beings; the things which hold us back (the invisible 'brakes') and the issues so many of us are struggling with.

One of the things I've learned is the fact that most of us are hiding, if not completely, we're hiding at least part of ourselves.  And it's one of the main causes of the mental health struggles we go through.  It begins as a trauma whilst we're still young, either a small 't' or capital 'T' trauma, but it's traumatic for us anyway.  And so, in order to help protect ourselves from experiencing it again, we hide part of ourselves in the belief that if others can't see that part of us (the real us) then we won't experience the rejection again.

But the problem with hiding in the 'fortress' we've made, is that the fortress turns into a prison if we decide to stay there.  And then we maintain that habit through the rest of our lives until we decide to, bit by bit, allow the rest of the world to catch a glimpse of the real us.

So, that's why I've decided to begin this blog, to write about the real life issues I've struggled with, to peel off the layers I've created over my life, to allow myself to come out into the open regarding the things I've previously not talked openly about.  And maybe, just maybe, it will inspire others to do the same.

Anyway, here's hoping that whoever you are that has decided to read or follow along with my blog, you'll find it something you resonate with and you feel some encouragement from realising that you're not alone.

Until next time...

Simon
